Why washer hardness matters on high-tensile joints
A wedge-locking washer works by its cams climbing under attempted rotation — which requires the cam faces and serrations to stay hard and undamaged under very high bearing loads. On high-tensile turbine and compressor bolting, a soft washer deforms and the locking action is lost. Alloy 718 provides the strength and hardness to match high-tensile, high-temperature bolting where carbon-steel washers are not suitable for the environment and 316L is not strong enough. Confirm surface hardness compatibility with the joint designer's specification.
