ASTM FastenerStandards
Understanding ASTM specifications for stud bolts, nuts, and high-strength fasteners used in critical industrial applications across Oil & Gas, LNG, Power Generation, Mining, and Heavy Engineering.
What Is ASTM International?
ASTM International (formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials) is one of the world's largest voluntary standards development organisations. Founded in 1898, ASTM develops and publishes technical standards for a wide range of materials, products, systems, and services — including industrial fasteners used in safety-critical applications.
For fastener applications in Oil & Gas, LNG, Power Generation, Mining, and Heavy Engineering, ASTM standards define the essential requirements that ensure reliability, safety, and performance. These specifications govern everything from raw material chemistry to final mechanical properties, creating a framework that engineers and procurement professionals rely upon worldwide.
Mechanical Properties
Defined tensile strength, yield strength, hardness, and elongation requirements for each grade.
Chemical Composition
Strict limits on alloying elements ensuring consistent material performance and weldability.
Heat Treatment
Specified quenching and tempering processes to achieve required mechanical properties.
Traceability & Certification
EN 10204 Type 3.1 certificates with full heat number traceability for audit compliance.
Common ASTM Fastener Standards We Supply
Our comprehensive inventory covers the most widely specified ASTM fastener grades for industrial applications, with full certification and traceability.
ASTM A193 — Alloy & Stainless Steel Stud Bolts
High-temperature and high-pressure bolting for pressure vessels, valves, flanges, and fittings in petroleum, chemical, and power generation industries.
Alloy Steel Grades
Chromium-molybdenum alloy steel, quenched and tempered. The most common grade for flange bolting in refineries, pipelines, and pressure equipment.
Matching Nut: A194 2H
Lower hardness variant of B7 for sour gas (H₂S) environments per NACE MR0175. Maximum hardness HRC 22.
Matching Nut: A194 2HM
Higher strength chromium-molybdenum-vanadium alloy for elevated temperature service up to 538°C (1000°F).
Matching Nut: A194 4, 7
Stainless Steel Grades
Type 304 stainless steel. Class 1 is solution treated (lower strength), Class 2 is strain hardened (higher strength).
Matching Nut: A194 8
Type 316 stainless steel with molybdenum for improved corrosion resistance. Preferred for marine and chemical environments.
Matching Nut: A194 8M
Applications: Pressure vessels, heat exchangers, valves, flanges, pumps, and compressors in oil refineries, petrochemical plants, and power stations.
ASTM A194 — Carbon & Alloy Steel Nuts
Heavy hex nuts designed to pair with A193 stud bolts for high-temperature and high-pressure service applications.
Carbon steel, quenched and tempered. Standard pairing for A193 B7.
Pairs with: A193 B7
Lower hardness for sour service per NACE MR0175.
Pairs with: A193 B7M
Alloy steel for elevated and low temperature service.
Pairs with: A193 B16, A320 L7
Type 304/316 stainless steel for corrosion resistance.
Pairs with: A193 B8/B8M
ASTM A320 — Low Temperature Stud Bolts
Alloy steel bolting for cryogenic and sub-zero applications down to -150°F (-101°C). Essential for LNG, cold climate installations, and refrigeration systems.
Chromium-molybdenum alloy steel, impact tested. Standard grade for LNG and cryogenic service.
Matching Nut: A194 4, 7
Lower hardness variant for sour gas environments requiring NACE compliance.
Matching Nut: A194 7M
Nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy for severe low temperature applications.
Matching Nut: A194 7
Applications: LNG terminals, cryogenic storage tanks, cold climate pipelines, refrigeration systems, and sub-sea installations where low temperature toughness is critical.
ASTM A307 — Carbon Steel Bolting
General purpose bolting for structural and low-pressure applications.
Headed bolts, threaded rods. General structural use.
Heavy hex bolts and studs for flanged joints in piping.
Applications: Structural steel connections, low-pressure piping, and general industrial use.
ASTM F1554 — Anchor Bolts
Steel anchor bolts for civil and structural foundation applications.
36 ksi yield. Weldable, general purpose anchoring.
55 ksi yield. Weldable, higher strength applications.
105 ksi yield. High-strength, non-weldable.
Applications: Bridge bearings, structural steel columns, equipment foundations, and heavy machinery bases.
ASTM Grades vs Applications
Selecting the correct ASTM grade depends on service conditions. Consider these key factors when specifying fasteners for your project:
Temperature
- High temp (>450°F): A193 B7, B16
- Ambient: A193 B7, A307
- Low temp (<-20°F): A320 L7, L43
- Cryogenic: A320 grades
Pressure Class
- High pressure: A193 B7, B16
- Medium pressure: A193 B7
- Low pressure: A307 Grade B
- Structural: A307 Grade A
Corrosive Environment
- Sour gas (H₂S): B7M, 2HM
- Marine/chemical: B8M, 8M
- General corrosion: B8, 8
- Mild: B7, 2H
Industry Standards
- API compatibility
- ASME B16.5 flanges
- NORSOK cross-reference
- NACE MR0175 compliance
