    The right alloy.
    The right specification.

17-4 PH (UNS S17400) is a chromium-nickel-copper precipitation-hardening stainless steel. It combines corrosion resistance with strength developed through heat treatment and is used for selected shafts, valve parts and engineered fasteners.

The condition is a procurement-critical detail. H900, H1025, H1150 and other specified conditions are not interchangeable: strength, hardness and toughness change with the treatment. EMG reviews the drawing and required condition before proposing supply through qualified partners.

    What to specify

    17-4 PH / Type 630

    S17400

Precipitation-hardening stainless for specified load-bearing fasteners, shafts and valve components.

    RFQ CHECK

State the final heat-treatment condition, product standard and required mechanical properties.

    Condition-specific supply

    H900 / H1025 / H1150

Examples of commonly specified ageing conditions; the drawing must identify the required route.

    RFQ CHECK

These are treatment designations, not different UNS alloys or a promise of availability.

Reference designations are not stock, certified equivalence or guaranteed service suitability. Final product requirements govern every quotation.

    WHERE THE SPECIFICATION MATTERS

    Engineered around the application

    Valve & actuator components

Stems, shafts and loaded parts where the approved design calls for condition-controlled precipitation-hardening stainless.

    Mining and minerals processing plant

    Pumps & mining equipment

Shafts, sleeves and mechanical parts with defined strength, fit and corrosion requirements.

    Special fasteners

Bolts, studs and nuts to drawing with a specified final condition and matching assembly requirements.

    ENGINEERING CHECKPOINTS

    Control the details that matter.

    01

    Condition before strength

Do not apply a single tensile or hardness value to every 17-4 PH part. The governing specification, section size and heat-treatment condition determine acceptance.

    02

    Sour service is conditional

A 17-4 PH designation alone does not establish NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 suitability. Check the permitted treatment, hardness and environmental restrictions with the responsible engineer.

    03

    Inspect the finished component

Specify heat-treatment records, mechanical tests, hardness, dimensional inspection and any additional non-destructive examination required by the drawing.
