B7M collar bolt and matching nuts illustrating custom fastener geometry, not the featured alloy
    ALLOY STEEL / SOUR SERVICE

    B7 vs B7M stud bolts

ASTM A193 B7 and B7M are distinct bolting grades; B7M has different mechanical and hardness requirements. A194 2H and 2HM nuts also differ, so a sour-service assembly must be checked as a complete stud-and-nut specification, not a single grade substitution.

    ENGINEERING BEFORE SUBSTITUTION

    Beyond the grade name.

A comparison helps frame the enquiry. The responsible engineer approves the material, condition and finished assembly.

Sour service changes the assembly review

Where the project invokes NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, identify the actual environment and the permitted material condition. Neither an M suffix nor an EN 10204 certificate alone establishes compliance with every sour-service requirement.

Check studs and nuts separately. Their standards, treatment and hardness records must match the approved purchase specification. Coatings and finished thread fit also need review; a coating does not change the underlying grade.

Australian plant maintenance: match the approved bill of materials

For oil, gas and LNG maintenance in Australia, start with the equipment drawing and materials schedule. EMG can review B7/2H and B7M/2HM enquiries, including inspection and coating requirements, with availability and lead time confirmed at quotation.

The documented B7M collar-bolt project linked below demonstrates a specific supplied component package. It is not evidence that every B7M assembly is suitable for every gas plant.

    Common questions

Can I use B7 instead of B7M in sour service?

Not without checking the governing specification and obtaining the responsible engineer’s approval. Review environment, heat treatment, hardness and the companion nuts; do not approve a substitution from grade names alone.

Are 2H and 2HM nuts interchangeable?

No automatic interchangeability applies. ASTM A194 treats them as different grades with different acceptance requirements. Use the nut grade identified in the approved assembly specification.

    Does B7M mean NACE-certified?

No. B7M identifies an ASTM grade. The project’s applicable sour-service requirements and the supplied condition still need verification and supporting records.
