    Monel 400 vs Monel K-500

Monel 400 and K-500 are different nickel-copper alloys: K-500 contains aluminium and titanium additions that enable age hardening. Specify the exact UNS and condition; higher strength does not establish automatic suitability or permission to replace Monel 400.

    ENGINEERING BEFORE SUBSTITUTION

    Beyond the grade name.

A comparison helps frame the enquiry. The responsible engineer approves the material, condition and finished assembly.

Strength, corrosion and the mating assembly

Review loaded bolts, studs, shafts and nuts as an assembly. K-500’s ageing route distinguishes it from 400, but corrosion exposure, hardness and the approved service specification still govern selection.

For Australian marine and oil-and-gas enquiries, send the drawing and materials schedule. EMG’s dedicated K-500 hex-bolt and stud-bolt pages support specification-led requests with buy-to-order, quoted lead time.

When should 625 or C-276 enter the review?

If the approved process-material review requires a different nickel-alloy system, Inconel 625 or Hastelloy C-276 may be candidates for engineering evaluation. Fluid chemistry, concentration, contaminants and mechanical requirements must drive that review.

There is no simple Monel → Inconel → Hastelloy ranking. Neither 625 nor C-276 is an automatic replacement, and no grade is universally best for seawater or every chemical stream.

    Common questions

    Is K-500 an Inconel alloy?

No. Monel K-500 is a nickel-copper alloy, UNS N05500. Inconel 625 and 718 belong to different nickel-alloy systems.

Can Monel 400 certificates cover K-500 bolts?

No. The alloys have different composition and treatment requirements. K-500 component acceptance requires traceable records for the specified K-500 material and final condition.

Which nickel alloy bolt is best for seawater?

There is no universal answer. The designer must assess exposure, crevices, loads, galvanic compatibility and supplied condition before approving a material.
