    Overview

Metric stud bolts are specified wherever flanges, vessels and equipment are designed to ISO, EN or DIN standards — common on European-built compressors, pumps, skids and packaged plant installed across Australian oil and gas, mining and power sites. EMG supplies metric ASTM A193 B7 (and its 42CrMo4 equivalent) stud bolts from M10 to M100 in coarse and fine pitch, continuous thread or double-end, cut to any length and paired with ASTM A194 2H metric heavy hex nuts. Every kit ships with heat-matched EN 10204 3.1 certification, and urgent orders are handled on short lead times through our RapidBolt emergency service.

EMG supplies metric B7/2H stud bolts from M10 to M100, cut to any length, heat-matched with metric heavy hex nuts and EN 10204 3.1 certified — with urgent dispatch available for shutdowns and breakdowns anywhere in Australia.

Metric sizes we supply most often

The most requested metric stud bolt sizes on Australian sites are M16, M20, M24, M27, M30, M33, M36, M39, M42, M45, M48, M52, M56 and M64, used across PN16 to PN100 metric flange classes. EMG also supplies smaller M10 and M12 studs for instrument and small-bore connections, and large-diameter M72 to M100 studs for heavy vessel and exchanger closures. Coarse pitch is standard; above M36 many European flange designs call for a 3 mm or 4 mm fine pitch, so the pitch should always be confirmed on the drawing or the enquiry.

Why metric and imperial must never be mixed

An M24 stud and a 1in stud look similar on a laydown pad, but the threads are not interchangeable. Forcing an imperial nut onto a metric stud — or the reverse — damages the thread flanks and dramatically reduces the load the joint can carry. On shutdowns where both systems are present, EMG labels every kit by size, pitch and heat number so the right bolting reaches the right joint.

Urgent lead times for shutdowns and breakdowns

Metric stud bolt shortages are a common cause of shutdown delays, because the bulk of Australian stock is imperial. EMG holds common metric B7 bar and 2H nuts and can cut, thread, coat and certify studs on compressed timelines. For breakdowns and outage-critical jobs, RapidBolt — our emergency bolting division — provides a direct line to quote and dispatch urgent metric kits to Brisbane, Gladstone, Perth, the Pilbara, Darwin and remote sites.

    Choosing the right metric grade

B7 with 2H nuts is the default for general high-pressure flange bolting. Where the process contains H2S, NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 requires hardness-controlled B7M with 2HM nuts. Low-temperature duty calls for impact-tested L7. Seawater and corrosive environments may need stainless B8M, duplex, super duplex or nickel alloy studs. EMG supplies every one of these grades in metric sizes, so the choice is driven by engineering, not availability.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    Technical FAQs

Do you supply metric B7 stud bolts in Australia?

    +
Yes. EMG supplies metric ASTM A193 B7 stud bolts from M10 to M100 with ASTM A194 2H metric heavy hex nuts, delivered to Brisbane, Gladstone, Perth, the Pilbara, Darwin and sites Australia-wide, with EN 10204 3.1 certification.

How quickly can you supply urgent metric stud bolts?

    +
Common metric sizes can be cut, threaded and dispatched quickly from stock bar. Coated or large-diameter studs take longer depending on the coating and testing required. For breakdowns and shutdowns, contact RapidBolt, our emergency bolting service, for the fastest possible turnaround.

What is the difference between metric B7 and 42CrMo4 studs?

    +
Both are quenched and tempered chromium-molybdenum alloy steels with very similar chemistry. B7 is certified to the ASTM A193 specification, while 42CrMo4 is the European material designation. Where a drawing calls for ASTM A193 B7, the studs must be certified to that specification — EMG supplies either, as specified.

Can metric stud bolts be supplied in fine pitch?

    +
Yes. Fine-pitch metric studs such as M36x3, M42x3, M48x3 and M64x4 are supplied to order. Always confirm the pitch on the drawing, as many European flange designs use fine pitch above M36.

Do metric stud bolt kits include nuts?

    +
Yes. Standard kits include one stud and two ASTM A194 2H metric heavy hex nuts, heat-matched and covered by one certificate. Hardened washers can be added on request.

What coatings are available on metric stud bolts?

    +
Xylan 1424, PTFE, GEOMET, zinc-nickel and hot-dip galvanising are available, applied strictly to your specification. Plain black studs are also supplied where the joint will be coated or protected on site.
